Why should I be assessed?
Your data centre or computer room uses a huge amount of energy, particularly in relation to the rest of your organization . BCS assessment will help you uncover the energy saving potential of relatively simple procedures, improving your costs, efficiency and limiting your CO2 output.
If your data centre achieves a BCS Award, you can use this fact to differentiate your facility from your organization’s peers and competitors in advertising and marketing material.
What is the basis of accreditation and Award?
Accreditation includes an assessment for which the criteria are based on the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centers (EU CoC), which has been instrumental in formalizing and identifying energy efficiency practices within data centers and computer rooms.
Why shouldn’t I just sign up to the EU Code of Conduct then?
The Code of Conduct is a mainly paper-based exercise which allows data centre owners and operators to complete and submit an application to the EU and allows them up to 3 years from date of application to implement the required practices. By contrast, BCS accreditation involves a physical assessment based on a visit to the data centre resulting in a report on what is actually happening in the facility now, not what is promised in 2013. BCS accreditation offers the option of achieving the BCS Data Centre Energy Efficient Award for your data centre(s).
I’m already a Participant in the EU Code of Conduct. Will I be guaranteed an Award?
No,The BCS Award is based on best practices in place at the time of assessment.
Code of Conduct Participant status can be gained on promises to carry out the required Best Practices within 3 years of application.
What is the BCS Data Centre Energy Efficient Award?
Our highly qualified and experienced assessors are BCS members with CITP status and have the ISEB Certificate in EU CoC. One of these Assessors will make an on-site visit to your facility and check through your energy and cooling procedures. If your facility comes up to standard you will be awarded the BCS Data centre energy efficient Award, certification that demonstrates your true commitment to energy efficiency.
What protection is there for our sensitive and confidential information relating to the data centre and our activities?
BCS assessors are bound by the ethical conduct standards required of those with CITP status but also have a legal commitment to delete all information relating to your organization when it has been transmitted to BCS. This information will be securely retained by BCS for use in subsequent annual renewals or Award level upgrades. The only information that BCS plan to publish is a list of data centers that have achieved an Award along with the Level and date of award. This is seen by most organizations as a significant benefit but you can request privacy if you wish.
What if I haven’t put all the required energy efficiency procedures yet in place?
The accreditation has three levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) and providing you have put in place some of the required practices, you should attain one of these levels. Even if you don’t reach the minimum standard required, you will be given a detailed report on how to become more energy efficient.
